Brandon is MIA this week, but in his place sits the illustrious Jon Shafer, veteran of Firaxis and Stardock and newly crowned emporer of Conifer Games. He joins Bill and Todd for episode #162 of Jumping the Shark to talk about his newest project, Jon Shafer's At the Gates, a turn-based 4x game that puts you in control of one of several barbarian tribes seeking to bring down the crumbling Roman Empire. Along the way Bill talks about the latest projects in the works at Conquistador and his sad fall from the wagon as he returns to the haunted halls of Dark Souls. Thanks for listening, and don't forget to send feedback to Bill (bill@nohighscores.com), Todd (todd@nohighscores.com), or Brandon (brandon@noghighscores.com). |

Come on out for another thrilling installment! With Bill and Brandon off traveling the world (sort of), their seats on this week's Jumping the Shark are ably filled by fellow No High Scores comrades, Brian Rowe and Matt Thrower, who join Todd this week to talk about the challenge developers face in giving gamers the information they need to overcome challenges without letting it get too easy or frustratingly difficult. After that, the discussion turns towards topic of locking games to specific user accounts and what makes Steam different from the prospect of retail games being locked to a console or specific user for next-gen consoles. All that and more awaits you in episode 118!

This week on Jumping the Shark it's all Mass Effect 3. Just kidding. No, this week, we talk about some of the rumors surrounding the possible announcement of the Playstation 4. In particular, the prospect of console makers clamping down on players' ability to play used games on their console. Is it starting to get out of hand? Then, Bill talks Tiger Woods Kinect and finds it a surprisingly compelling experience despite wrenching his back while trying to uncork a long drive. Yes, folks, we have our first Kinect injury! It was only a matter of time. Thanks for listening, and don't forget to send feedback to Bill (bill@nohighscores.com), Brandon (brandon@nohighscores.com) or Todd (todd@nohighscores.com). |

Danielle is out sick, but Tom Chick joins us to talk about game endings: the good, the not so good and why they often suck rocks. We also talk about Dead Island, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Space Marine and BloodRayne: Betrayal. Thanks for listening and don't forget to send all podcast feedback to wabner@gameshark.com. |

This week, the usual crew of Brandon, Danielle and Todd, (minus Bill!) discussed the finer points of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Quarrel, Crazy Machines: Elements and Rock of Ages, with a dash of Civ V to keep things spicy. For our topic, we discussed the perennial question: "Do game reviewers suck at games?", as inspired by Mitch Krpata's awesome article Doing it wrong: Are game reviewers bad at video games? over at Joystick Division. Our answers may shock and inspire you. Thanks for listening and don't forget to send all podcast feedback to wabner@gameshark.com. |

This week Jumping the Shark is short one Brandon (who's off searching for the Lost Ark of the Covenant), but we pick up a Tom Chick, who braves the heat to chat with us about game remakes: When are they a good thing? When do they waste of everyone's time? What would we like to see remade in the future? First, however, we talk up the cavalcade of games we've been playing over the past week. First up, a good long bit on Bastion, which all of us (sans Bill) have made a point to check out. Tom marvels at just how bad Call of Juarez: The Cartel and Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 3 are, Danielle goes rogue(like) talking about Dungeons of Dredmor, and Bill talks a smattering of NCAA '12, Panzer Corps, and just a little bit of his Sengoku preview build. Oh yeah, and I give Mass Effect 2 some props for the one part of the game they absolutely nailed. Tom doesn't buy it, but then, what does he know? Join us for another week of laughter, tears, and just a hint of brash exuberance. Thanks for listening and don't forget to send all podcast feedback to wabner@gameshark.com. |

With E3 freshly behind us, we used this week's Jumping the Shark to talk about E3 the show. What we liked about this year's show. What we think is changing about it, for better or worse. Why you know more about what's going on there if you just stay home. Etc. In the what we're playing segment, Bill dispenses with Hunted, Brandon finds Greent Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters to be surprisingly enjoyable, Danielle digs out Costume Quest and Saints Row 2 from her back catalog, and I lament that my "early" copy of Dungeon Siege 3 refuses to install (due to a Steam activation issue). Thanks for listening and don't forget to send all podcast feedback to wabner@gameshark.com. |
